This itinerary works best when you want Perth plus a short South West stay. Drive times are approximate and do not include meaningful breaks, traffic or sightseeing.

Day 1: Arrive and recover in Perth

Collect the car using the confirmed handover instructions and drive to your accommodation. If everyone is rested, take one easy outing to Kings Park, Elizabeth Quay or a nearby beach. Avoid filling the first day after a UK flight.

Day 2: Perth city and the coast

Combine Kings Park, central Perth and Elizabeth Quay, then choose Cottesloe or Scarborough if the weather suits. Group nearby attractions together so you do not spend the day moving the vehicle and paying for several parking sessions.

Day 6: A second South West day

Use this day for the part of the region you missed: Cape Naturaliste and Dunsborough, the forest and cave areas, or a slower day around Margaret River. A second night turns the South West into a holiday rather than a rushed out-and-back drive.

Day 7: Return to Perth

Return in daylight where practical and choose only one main stop, such as Bunbury or Mandurah. Allow a proper break at least every two hours and extra time for refuelling, unloading and the arranged vehicle return.

How to extend the trip to 10 or 14 days

Extra time should make the route slower, not simply longer.

For a 10-day trip, add another Perth day, three or four nights in the South West and a separate day trip north to the Pinnacles. Return to Perth between the northern and southern sections rather than creating an awkward loop.

For a 14-day trip, you can spend more time around Margaret River and continue farther through the Southern Forests toward Pemberton or Denmark, subject to weather, road conditions and the permitted-use area in the rental agreement. Longer does not mean remote: a conventional car or SUV is suitable for sealed and well-maintained roads, while remote or unsealed travel needs separate planning and vehicle approval.

Do not casually add destinations such as Esperance or Exmouth to a short Perth itinerary. They involve major distances and deserve their own carefully planned route.

Should you include the Pinnacles?

The Pinnacles make a strong northern day trip or overnight journey from Perth. Do it on a separate day from the South West route. Combining the Pinnacles, Margaret River and several Perth attractions into seven days creates too much repeated highway driving.
