Choose the vehicle for the route, not just the daily price

A compact automatic can suit a couple staying around Perth. A sedan or hybrid can be comfortable and economical on sealed-road trips when its boot fits every bag. Families or travellers with sports gear, prams or several suitcases may prefer the easier access and flexible cargo space of an SUV.

Count passengers and luggage together. A seven-seater may have limited baggage room when all seats are raised, so seven seats do not automatically mean space for seven large suitcases.

This is the best all-round choice for first-time visitors who want Perth, beaches and a regional stay without changing accommodation every night.

Day 1: Arrive and settle into Perth

Complete the confirmed vehicle handover and drive to your accommodation. If everyone is rested, choose one easy activity such as Elizabeth Quay or Kings Park. Buy water and basic supplies, then keep the evening relaxed.

Day 2: Perth city, Kings Park and the river

Start with the city and Swan River views from Kings Park, then explore central Perth and Elizabeth Quay. Group nearby attractions together rather than repeatedly moving the vehicle, and read every parking sign carefully.

Day 3: Fremantle and the western beaches

Explore Fremantle's heritage streets and waterfront, then add Cottesloe Beach if the weather and daylight suit. Check market days and attraction hours rather than assuming they operate daily.

Day 4: Perth to Busselton

Drive south after breakfast and allow more than the direct map time for traffic, food and a genuine break. Spend the afternoon at the Busselton foreshore and jetty, then stay in Busselton, Dunsborough or Margaret River.

Day 5: Margaret River region

Prefer the Pinnacles? Use this northern alternative

The Pinnacles Desert in Nambung National Park is a strong alternative to the South West, especially if you want an unusual landscape and fewer nights away from Perth.

Keep Days 1 to 3 around Perth and Fremantle. On Day 4, travel north on Indian Ocean Drive to Cervantes and the Pinnacles, allowing time for rest stops and the national-park visit. Stay around Cervantes or Jurien Bay rather than forcing a late return after a full day.

Use Day 5 for the coast and return to Perth in daylight. Days 6 and 7 can then cover Swan Valley, a beach day or a flexible local day before departure.
